A News Organization For The Public Benefit
The Fourth Estate is an international, independent, nongovernmental, journalism Public Benefit Corporation.
Together with our members we endeavor to contribute to healthy societies by fostering, supporting and incubating a sustainable and vibrant free press.
We recognize that journalism producers — and consumers of that work — are mutually dependent on one another, and the quality of the relationship between these groups is directly connected to the health of society.
Running through our organization is a strong sense of obligation to serve the different stakeholders who count on us to deliver excellence in everything we do.
Membership in the Fourth Estate is open to all entities and persons able to benefit and use our services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.
Our Public Benefit business structure defines & sustains our positive impacts, reinforces the benefits of a double bottom line news business, attracts impact investors, and stands out in a confused marketplace as a company whose basis in business is for social good.
Our equity-holding members contribute to and democratically control the organization.
The economic benefits of the Fourth Estate’s operations are used to further our mission or are returned to the members, reinvested and used to expand or provide services.
We are guided first by our mission and controlled by our equity-members.
As a matter of policy, funding sources exercise no control over the Fourth Estate’s editorial decisions.
We serve all stakeholders of the journalism ecosystem from news creators to those that consume the news by providing the information and services needed to effectively and efficiently fulfill our mission.
We seek to equip individuals and communities with the news and information they need to make informed decisions.
We serve our members and society most effectively by working cooperatively at the local, national, regional and international levels.
It is our mission to contribute to a healthy society by fostering, supporting and incubating a sustainable and vibrant free press.
By combining innovative programs, global advocacy, and targeted initiatives, we will define the future of news and journalism in the public interest
Our core values of truth, transparency and community are at the heart of the Fourth Estate.
They define who we are, how we work, what we believe in and what we stand for.
We believe that an independent, sustainable free press is built on established and equitable free-market principles.
We believe in the business of news and journalism.
