Statement in Response to Raid By Australian Authorities on Journalist and Offices of the of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)
Fourth Estate's Executive Director - W. Jeffrey Brown - issued the following statement in response to the June 5th raid by Australian Federal Police (AFP) on the home of News Corp. journalist Annika Smethurst, and the Sydney Offices of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
"It is extremely disturbing that the Australian Federal Police would conduct such a raid on a legitimate news organization engaged in important public service journalism, and scrutiny of government affairs and officials."
"Aside from the obvious chilling effect such heavy handed actions have on democratic press freedom, the Australian authorities actions can only be perceived as an attempt to intimidate journalists from performing their essential watchdog duties. Raids on journalists and news organizations are something that cannot be allowed to happen - they are the tactics of dictators and authoritarians."
