Statement on Georgia Legislation Seeking to Establish Government Controlled Oversight of the Free Press
Fourth Estate's Executive Director - W. Jeffrey Brown - issued the following statement in response to Georgia House Bill 734, sponsored by Rep. Andy Welch, (R) McDonough, that proposes establishing government controlled ethical standards of journalists.
"The Fourth Estate strongly advocates that journalists worldwide uphold the highest of ethical standards in their practice of journalism, However we denounce - forcefully - this attempt by a politician seeking to use the power and weight of the government to censor and silence a free press or the voice of journalists."
"The free press that it is protected by the First Amendment, because it is essential to any democracy where the government is accountable to the people."
