The Fourth Estate supports H.R. 4935: The Journalist Protection Act

HR-4935 aka ‘Journalist Protection Act‘ , makes it a federal crime to intentionally cause bodily injury to a journalist affecting interstate or foreign commerce in the course of reporting or in a manner designed to intimidate him or her from news gathering for a media organization.

The Journalist Protection Act’s co-sponsors include:

  • Steve Cohen (TN-9),
  • David Cicilline (RI-1),
  • Grace Napolitano (CA-32),
  • Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC),
  • Andre Carson (IN-7),
  • Debbie Dingell (MI-12),
  • Darren Soto (FL-9),
  • Ro Khanna (CA-17),
  • Jose Serrano (NY-15),
  • Bobby Rush (IL-1),
  • Maxine Waters (CA-43),
  • Gwen Moore (WI-4).

“From the birth of our republic the press has been recognized for the vital role they play in our democracy, and holding the government and the powerful accountable to the people.” said Jeff Brown of the Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation.

“In today’s climate of antagonism and hostility journalists in America are routinely intimidated, targeted, attacked and even slain. Members of the Fourth Estate must be able undertake their important work without fear of facing violent attack and intimidation. They deserve the same protections that have been extended to other servants of the public. HR-4935 makes it a federal crime to attack or intimidate those that are reporting the news and gives authorities the power to prosecute.” he added.
