Fourth Estate Denounces Conviction of Reuters journalists in Myanmar; calls for release

The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation is calling on Myanmar’s government to immediately release jailed journalists, Wa Lone (aged 32), and Kyaw Soe Oo (aged 28) and vacate a court decision that imprisoned the journalists for seven years.

The Reuters journalists were arrested in December of 2017 while investigating mass killings of Rohingya villagers by Myanmar government military forces.  The journalists were convicted for violating Myanmar’s colonial-era Official Secrets Act by collecting and obtaining confidential government documents.

“Reuters journalists, Wa Lone & Kyaw Soe Oo were actively engaged in important public service journalism — investigating and exposing egregious human rights atrocities & mass killings that were committed by Myanmar government security forces.  Threats to journalists and press freedoms anywhere, threaten press freedom everywhere.” said Jeff Brown, Founder and Executive Director of the Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corp.
