The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation today announced the establishment of the Steve Buttry Award for College Journalism.
The accolade is named in honor of the late Steve Buttry, a veteran journalist and educator who served as a tireless mentor to students, journalists, and news organizations for more than four decades.
The award honors excellence in original collegiate journalism that best exemplifies the Fourth Estate’s core values of Truth, Transparency, and Community.
“Steve was a valued and contributing member of the Fourth Estate’s Journalism Advisory Board, a tireless and natural journalism educator and mentor,” said Jeff Brown, Founder of the Fourth Estate. “Naming this award in Steve’s honor recognizes his unfaltering dedication, faith, and enthusiasm for the future of Journalism. Steve was not just respected, but also loved by his peers, colleagues, and students.”
The Fourth Estate will also donate a portion of the application fees for the Steve Buttry Award for College Journalism to a scholarship fund at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University where Steve served as Director of Student Media up to his death.
The Fourth Estate honors excellence and innovation in journalism through various awards open to professional, collegiate and high school journalists and news organizations in all forms of media.
