Statement Regarding Chicago Mayor’s Race Based Interview Policy

The following statement is by W. Jeffrey Brown, Founder and Executive Director of the Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation, regarding Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s race based interview access policy.

News organizations should broadly reflect the diversity of the communities and constituents that they serve, and should at all times strive to eliminate interpersonal, institutional, and structural racism.

We applaud Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s actions that shine a bright light on the unappealing diversity imbalance that pervades news organizations everywhere, not just in Chicago.

While we collectively work to create truly inclusive and equitable organizations, we caution against objectionable policies or actions that restricts the Freedom of the Press.

No elected official should ever seek to restrict access to them, by any member of the free press, based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran, or disability status.
