In order to participate in JournSpark, a website must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • be engaged in original local news-gathering and reporting,
  • Act in the public interest, broadly defined,
  • is a small commercial entity, a non-profit organization or affiliated with an accredited educational institution,
  • have annual revenue of less than $250K annually,
  • have not been a recipient of JournSpark aid in the past five years.

* Participation is re-evaluated annually and you may participate for a maximum of three (3) years unless otherwise approved by the Fourth Estate.


JournSpark Program FAQ

Who is eligible for the JournSpark Startup Program?
The JournSpark Program is open to any qualifying news outlet, press clubs or school affiliated news outlet or website anywhere in the world.

How will I know if I’ve been accepted?
You will be notified within 7-10 business days if you have been accepted into the program at which point you will be asked to confirm enrollment and create your account. Only accepted applicants will be notified, although we may contact you if we need additional information.

How long can I stay enrolled in the program?
You may be enrolled in JournSpark for a maximum of three years, as long as you maintain eligibility.

Do I need to be a member of the Fourth Estate to be accepted?
While we certainly hope that you will find membership to be valuable and beneficial it is not a requirement to participate in the JournSpark program. 

Is there any fee or costs to participate?
There’s a one time $1/setup fee. (this is charged to allow us to validate your identity and prevent fraud). The only other fees would be for products and services such as premium SSL certificates and/or domain name registration.

How long does it take to review my application?
Please allow up to 7-10 business days for us to review your application. Only startups that have been accepted into the program will be notified.

What hosting benefits come with the program?
The JournSpark includes generous 150 GB storage, unlimited data transfer and free online support.  The web hosting packages are fully packed with high-end apps and free software to empower the most demanding news publishers and journalism initiatives. Focus on your journalism rather than spending time installing and configuring apps and software.

What type of support will I receive?
You will be provided email or online support as it relates to the web hosting environment, email and hosting services. You will be responsible for your own web design, software development and content.
